Top 5 Things to Do in Perth

If you study in Perth, you will undoubtedly be treated to an excellent education, a kind and generous people and some of the most wonderful weather that could possibly be imagined.

Beyond those though, what are some things unique to Perth that they can offer? Let’s find out…

Meet a Penguin at (Where Else?) Penguin Island

How can you hear that name and not immediately want to go?

After a short ferry ride across Shoalwater Bay, you will find one of Australia’s best wildlife parks: Shoalwater Islands Marine Park, which includes dolphins, sea lions, stingrays, pelicans and other seabirds. There are reefs for snorkelling and wonderful boardwalks and lookouts to explore. At its heart though is Penguin Island, where you can meet the world’s smallest penguins (!).

Explore Perth’s Urban Neighbourhoods

Western Australia’s capital city offers so much, but we’d be remiss to not mention the villages just outside of the city centre, each unique and interesting in their own way. Leederville offers alfresco cafes and diverse shops, perfect for spending an easy-going weekend afternoon.

Northbridge is perfect for Chinese food, local fashion outlets and multicultural food stores while Mount Lawley does perfectly for everyone’s inner hipster; bars, restaurants and pubs are plentiful.

These are just a few of many, and to only describe them doesn’t do them justice. You really have to explore them to get their true sense.

Appreciate Postcard Beauty at Swan River

One of the most photogenic sights of Perth (and that’s saying something) is the Swan River, which runs through the city and offers great opportunities for a jog, a cycle, a picnic, a walk, or even a bit of sailing or fishing.

If you’d prefer something a little more laidback though, you can walk to one of the river’s vantage points like Kings Park and Botanic Garden and truly admire the beauty for yourself.

Explore the Area’s History at Fremantle

Fremantle blends the old with the new and you can see colonial remnants like Fremantle Prison or the Roundhouse alongside modern cafes, markets and the electric nightlife of a 21st century city. This contrast leads to an eclectic mix of people, with urbane musicians and artists commonly found throughout.

Also worthy of note is that Lonely Planet ranked Fremantle as the 7th best city in the world, even beating out cities such as Rome, which isn’t bad company to keep.

Take a Selfie with a Quokka on Rottnest Island

Rottnest Island, like so much of Perth, is home to picturesque beaches, beautiful bays, reefs and unique plants and animals that are too numerous to count.

But perhaps Perth’s best-known adventure is a trip to meet the quokka, so famed because of its comically cheeky grin and Instagram stardom. Incredibly friendly, the quokka will sit patiently for a photograph, but make sure to be careful with them!

It’s Also Home, Of Course, to Phenomenal Places to Study

Of course, the beauty and culture of Perth doesn’t mean much if the universities and colleges aren’t up to scratch. But fortunately, Perth is home to some exceptional places of education.
